Meeting Called to Order

President Ross called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
The Pledge was led by Ed.
Michael Torr gave an invocation.
We all recited the Four Way Test.
For a song, Ross chose "Deck The Halls".
Ross and Hans both had a joke for us.

Visiting Rotarians: James Gore (Healdsburg Sunrise), Barbara Bickford (Sebastopol Sunrise).

Guests of Rotarians: Soledad Cardona.

Correspondence: None.

Announcements: Ross gave a report from the previous Board Meeting in which we sorted through all of the grant proposals we received. Spreadsheets were passed around showing which grants were selected and for how much.

The board approved the long-on-hold payment to Go Big Ghana for $2,000. They're ready to start laying the foundation of the community center at last.

$1,500 was also approved for Global Student Embassy, they will visit our club again to speak about their program.

Herman J. updated us on the Crab Feed. All tickets are sold out, there is a growing waiting list as well.

Herman G. reminded us that the Parade of Lights is this Saturday. He still has tickets for the Prince & Princess dinner at Chef Patrick's on 12/5 @ 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $35.

Soledad passed out gingerbread people. On the back of each is a needy child's name, age, and a suggested gift. Those who want to participate can also get them from the Christmas tree at Westamerica Bank. Please bring gifts to the River to Coast Children's Services Office by 12/19 (corner of 1st Street and Church).

Our December social will be at Betty Spaghetti's at R^3 (corner of 4th and Mill St.) on 12/19 @ 6 p.m.

Happy Bucks: Marty's son and daughter in law are expecting a child ($5). Jeff's friend was elected to the Healdsburg City Council after a tight race ($10). Herman G. gave a buck to be happy to have his parents out of his hair for a month while they're in Mexico. Andy gave $5 for Michael's birthday. Mike Torr's beard had it's 40th birthday (still older than several members in the club!) so he threw in a buck.

Fines: Hans, Lori, Daniela, and Herman G. were fined "just because." Hans and Lori were fined a further $5 each for their Thanksgiving Day trip to Alcatraz first thing in the morning and back to the Union Hotel by evening for dinner. Brendan had $5 of Ross' fine passed on to him "just because" and a further $5 for having a good time at the Gala Fund-raiser for the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Daniela was fined another $5 for her trip back east to NYC, Philly, and Hoboken (?!?). Then she and Herman G. were fined another $5 for his upcoming swearing-in at Sonoma County Office of Education. Herman G. was fined another $5 for asking too many questions! Mike Nicholls was fined $5 for his birthday, but as he was at his fine limit, he passed it on to Jeff. Donna was passed on a fine of $13 from Herman J. who was also over his fine limit by that amount.

Raffle: Herman G. had the winning ticket, but could only manage to pull an 8 from the deck.

Program: James Gore, the 4th District Supervisor-Elect spoke to us. He returns from working as the Assistant Chief of Conservation at the Department of Agriculture. He and his wife have a new baby at home. He wants to represent the people foremost. He spoke briefly then opened it up to questions from the audience. On immigration, he supports immigrant rights and reform. Ross asked him about Restorative Justice. He is much in favor of it, particularly as it is "data driven" results are easy to measure and school expulsion rates are falling. This is a facet of the whole idea of upstream investment. Mike Nicholls made a case for the inclusion of the rural West County areas that feel like they are ignored when compared to the Highway 101 corridor.

The Four Way Test

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build good will and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

The Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

1st: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

2nd: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

3rd: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

4th: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
